Los Angeles Apartment Moving Checklist: Start With Access

Make a plan for both buildings before packing the last box. Use this checklist to coordinate access, measure difficult items and prepare your moving-day handoff.

Make a separate plan for each building

For an apartment move in Los Angeles, the route between your front door and the moving truck matters as much as the route between the two addresses. A reserved elevator at your new building will not help if the loading entrance at your old building is locked.

Start with two access notes: one for move-out and one for move-in. Record what is confirmed, what is still pending and who can answer each open question. Share both with your mover before agreeing to the schedule. You can finish the details as you go, but the restrictions should be visible from the beginning.

Ask management for the moving instructions

Contact the property manager at each address. Ask about permitted moving hours, the entrance the crew should use, and any elevator or loading-bay reservation. Find out whether your reservation covers the full moving window or just a specific period, and keep the confirmation on your phone.

If management requires a certificate of insurance or other paperwork, obtain the exact instructions and submission deadline. Send those to the moving company early enough to discuss what is needed. Do not assume that sending a document means the building has accepted it; confirm its status with management.

You can use this message: ‘I am arranging a move on [date]. Please send the move-in or move-out hours, elevator and loading instructions, required documents, and the contact who can help us access the building that day.’

Walk the full route from loading area to door

Walk the route the crew will actually use. Note steps before the elevator, a long hallway, a narrow gate or a sharp turn on a landing. Include the floor and number of stair flights even if there is an elevator; an elevator does not necessarily remove every stair from the route.

Take clear photos of difficult turns and entrances to share privately with the mover. Keep neighbors, mail, access codes and other private information out of the frame. If the loading area has a height restriction or an awkward approach, report it instead of guessing whether the truck will fit.

For street loading, confirm the arrangements for that exact address with the mover, building and relevant city authority. Establish who will check any permit requirements. A resident parking permit or a few cones should not be treated as confirmation that a moving truck can load there.

Check the schedule as one connected move

Put both building windows beside the mover's proposed arrival window. Allow the moving company to assess loading, travel and unloading together. An arrival window is not a promise that the crew will reach your second building at a particular minute.

For example, a morning move-out reservation and an early afternoon move-in reservation may look compatible on paper. The inventory, loading route and travel still need to fit between them. Share fixed deadlines before booking and ask what happens if access changes. Confirm who will be at the destination with keys and who can speak to management if the elevator is unavailable.

Measure furniture that may need a separate plan

List the pieces you are least certain about: a sectional, tall cabinet, large table or bed assembled inside the room. Measure the item and the narrow openings on its route. Include corners and landings, because doorway width alone cannot show whether a long piece will turn.

Tell the mover about loose joints, existing damage, missing hardware or previous difficulties moving a piece. Ask what can be assessed before moving day and what disassembly is included in the written scope. Do not assume that every item comes apart, that doors can be removed, or that an unusual lifting method will be available.

Pack for the destination and keep essentials separate

Label the top and side of each box with its destination room and a short description. ‘Kitchen — everyday plates’ is easier to place than ‘Miscellaneous.’ For similar rooms, agree on simple labels such as ‘Bedroom 1’ and ‘Bedroom 2,’ then show the crew which is which before unloading.

Keep keys, documents, chargers and the things you need that evening in a clearly separated personal bag. Tell everyone helping which items should stay with you. Stage packed boxes inside your apartment without blocking exits or shared hallways; a convenient pile should not create an access problem.

Save this two-address checklist

Make a copy for each building and fill in the actual details. Put ‘pending’ beside an unanswered item instead of leaving a blank that could be mistaken for ‘not needed.’

  • Address, unit and floor: confirm the complete destination.
  • Moving window: record the permitted hours and reservation confirmation.
  • Loading route: identify the entrance, stairs, elevator and difficult turns.
  • Documents: record what management requested and whether it was accepted.
  • Access contact: save the name and number for moving-day help.
  • Open questions: assign each question to the building, mover or yourself.

Confirm changes before moving day

The day before the move, check the reservations, keys, contacts and agreed arrival window. Tell the mover about added furniture, another stop or packing that remains unfinished. Keep the latest written scope easy to find so an older message does not become the working plan.
